ACTUA’S INDIGENOUS YOUTH IN STEM PROGRAM (INSTEM)

Actua has been invited by one of the tournament sponsors, Associated Engineering (AE), to provide hands-on (STEM) activities during the tournament for hockey players, their families, and community members.

Activities are suitable for ages 5-15. Parental/guardian supervision will be required at all times.

Classroom Champions

Featuring Olympic silver medalist and the first First Nations hockey player to be named to Canada's National Women's Team, Brigette Lacquette.

Leading international education charity Classroom Champions, in partnership with the City of Grande Prairie and the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships, is facilitating a powerful community-wide event featuring Olympic silver medalist and the first First Nations hockey player to be named to Canada's National Women's Team, Brigette Lacquette. St Joseph’s will open its doors to up to 1,300 local students, teachers and families, as well as Indigenous athletes from across Canada competing in the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships, to hear from Lacquette and community leaders to address important themes facing youth. The speaking event will be followed by an opportunity to take photos with Brigette.

Hand Games

Hey Folks! Get ready for some real fun! We're excited to host the traditional Dene Hand games at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championship.

Just a bit of a background, the Dene Hand Game is steeped in deep history. Played years ago as a fun form of gambling, In the past, players used to wager things like bullets, furs, dogs and toboggans,

The game itself is simple, yet incredibly engaging – it's all about hiding and guessing using elaborate hand signals and gestures. It's a test of skill, strategy and teamwork.

So come on out, learn about this rich cultural practice, engage in some friendly competition and let's celebrate our community together!

RBC Training Ground

Good news athletes between the ages of 14 and 25! The RBC Training Ground is landing in Grande Prairie!

RBC Training Ground will be at the Eastlink Centre on May 6 to identify promising new athletic talents. Through tests measuring strength, power, endurance, and aerobic fitness, aiming to discover potential Olympic stars. Get set for a day of:

  • Thrilling sports trials 

  • Breathtaking performances 

  • And, loads of fun!

6th Annual MMIW+ 5km Walk/Run at Muskoseepi Park.

Join the Grande Prairie Friendship Center for the 6th Annual MMIW+ 5km Walk/Run at Muskoseepi Park. Let's unite and wear red to show our support for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. We invite Jingle Dress Dancers to dance at the Sisters In Spirit Rock during the walk/run.

Together, we can raise awareness and honour their lives.

Time: 10:00 am Registration opens, 10:45 am Elder blessing, 11:00 am 5Km walk
Where: Muskoseepi Park Amphitheatre

Registration opens on May 5th at 10:00 am, first 200 people to register and pay $10 will receive a unique medal
